What a treat! There is a red currant bush right outside my dining room window. It is always the first thing in the yard to bloom in the spring, and it is covered with lovely red/purple flowers right now. Within a few days of when it begins blooming, the first hummingbirds of the year appear. Shortly after that come the bees.
Yesterday, I was having lunch with my little 2-year-old grandson. He suddenly jumped with surprise and pointed to the currant bush--a lovely little hummingbird was dipping into the flowers about two inches from the window! She was completely oblivious of our presence as we crept up to the window to watch her. My grandson was fascinated--his first hummingbird sighting! How magical!
Just a few minutes after the hummingbird left, I looked out the window again and there was a big bumblebee! I called to my grandson over to the window again. "A little scary!" he said. (Okay, it sounded more like "litto scawy!") I explained that as long as he didn't try to touch bees they would not act scary, but instead were really wonderful little creatures who helped the flowers. Relieved, he was able to relax and feel excited again.
I am so grateful to be able to share those experiences with him and feel the wonder of these tiny magical beings together! My heart melts.
